The glossary is in progress.

Augmented reality creates experiences and interactions by overlaying some form of additional digital layer over what is being seen. For example an AR device in a historical site may show a schematic reconstruction of what it was once like, or for business purposes show an information box above the heads of people in a meeting with their name and role. In some cases AR is provided using body worn equipment such as augmented reality glasses, in others using a hand held device such as mobile phone. Critical to all is the registration of the device with the environment which may be achieved using sensors such as GPS and compass, image matching or the user holding it in the right position.
